Tether Trigonometry - STEM Game
Learning Objectives:
Students will:
- determine unknown side lengths in right triangles.
- calculate the area of a circle by solving for the radius, using real-world problems and trigonometry.
IDA (Intelligent Discovery Agent) Is a sea robot, designed to resemble and function like the beloved Dumbo Octopus. She is curious and needs the help of a human to complete the mission. IDA explains who Pythagoras is and how he features in our mission. IDA explains that they are searching for the lost statue of Pythagoras in the Aegean Sea. IDA explains that Argus and Hercules make a triangle the is useful in predicting the area of the sea floor that they can observe.
Controls:
W = Up
S = Down
A = Left
D = Right
Objectives:
> IDA observed you confirming that a right triangle exists in theory between Argus, Herc, and Delta Depth.
> The player needs to park the ROV at a specific place. Delta Depth is known and Tether hypotonus is known. When the player parks the ROV correctly, the X (horizontal range) is revealed. On screen graphics show the math updating as the player moves.
> The player needs to move Argus to the right depth to for optimal horizontal range and tether length. Once again the onscreen graphics reveal the math updating.
>The player has to adjust the depth of Argus, the position of Herc, and the horizontal range to achieve the optimal search area. Note the error in the formular for area.
